“The Brevard County School Board is asking a judge to weigh in on a matter that could limit teachers’ ability to challenge disciplinary measures.
The lawsuit stems from a February arbitration ruling in the case of fired Satellite High teacher Melissa Calhoun, who was dismissed after she referred to one her students by the student’s chosen name — which reflected the student’s gender identity — without the student’s parent’s permission. Third-party arbitrator Mark Lurie ruled that Calhoun was incorrectly punished and should have been recommended reappointment.” (Florida Today, 9/14/2026)
